Clare Richardson's Harlemville

Clare Richardson’s Harlemville is a series of photographs taken in and around a rural community in North America. Richardson spent several months over the period of a year taking photographs of people in Harlemville, people who adhere to a philosophy of living that emphasises a back-to-nature simplicity, and the encouragement of free expression, creativity and play. In Harlemville, children are taught to be aware of nature, and are sequestered from the influence of the media and other elements of global society. Richardson’s images document pre-teen boys and girls involved in various everyday activities and outdoor play. Her images evoke a nostalgic sense of innocence and peace. The photographs also assign a very quiet sense of significance to these seemingly fleeting moments in a young person's life. Harlemville has been published as a book by Steidl. Apologies for the arrows, I took the images from a flash website, and also, sorry for the poor color quality.
