I was looking through some sites I have in my bookmarks, and came across some of Mark Steinmetz photographs. I am just getting back into looking at B&W stuff since I am currently teaching it at Saint Xavier University.

The first few photos are from his project Greater Atlanta. To me, this work really shows the complexity of Place, something I think a lot about when it comes to my own work. It was the first time I have actually seen any physical indicators of the effects that the housing market problems have had on the Midwestern suburbs I have visited over the past couple years. This is the only one I have finished working on so far, and as many of you know, it takes a long time to clean and prepare digital images. I will be posting more as I continue to work on the files.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MCdiOIwcXUE/ShHzp4nkoaI/AAAAAAAAAMk/abn0D7Z6Cu0/s400/78.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337314934309298594" />

A Long and Eventful Saturday

Today was quite a long day.

In the morning, I taught my class; Darkroom Identity at Marwen. This term, I am working with students between 6th and 8th grade. One of the things I love about teaching different age groups, is that from 6th grade all the way to late college, there are always motivated students who are eager to learn and enjoy the process of making photographs and challenging themselves and the people around them to do the same. These are some photographs from our field trip to Michigan Avenue, where they were asked to keep in mind the question; "How can I make a photograph that is about me without having myself in the picture?"

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MCdiOIwcXUE/Sf0qqTpNthI/AAAAAAAAAL0/mkDDDPhJy-k/s400/DSC09745.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331464440192546322" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MCdiOIwcXUE/Sf0qqWJz8yI/AAAAAAAAALs/E_kfO-_nvkA/s400/DSC09739.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331464440866140962" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MCdiOIwcXUE/Sf0qqJtZD7I/AAAAAAAAALk/G8GTl_nM8bY/s400/DSC09723.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331464437525712818" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MCdiOIwcXUE/Sf0qp3ExPSI/AAAAAAAAALc/HKIzxSvf-y8/s400/DSC09718.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331464432523492642" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MCdiOIwcXUE/Sf0qpkr9RPI/AAAAAAAAALU/tTrKDDljtf8/s400/DSC09711.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331464427587585266" />

The second part of my day was to spend about 4 and a half hours at the Merchandise Mart at Art Chicago and NEXT. If anything, I have become completely "arted-out," at least for a couple days. There was a lot of crap, in my opinion, but there were a number of gems that were wonderful. The following photos are a few of those.

The first two are images of an American Flag made from a collage of pornographic images. Absolutely stunning, and although I now don't remember the artist's name, I'm sure it won't be hard to find in the near future. The first is the full piece, and the second is a detail.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MCdiOIwcXUE/Sf0saS0lqfI/AAAAAAAAAL8/EB-aaFBL_Z8/s400/DSC09749.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331466364117166578" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MCdiOIwcXUE/Sf0sanRWpUI/AAAAAAAAAME/Xkx6zAsEfGc/s400/DSC09750.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331466369606526274" />

The next piece is a detail of an artists images of a strange man crawling out of a female's anus. Again, I don't remember the artist's name. I would had I not written the name on a receipt from coffee, which later I threw out forgetting I had written important info on it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MCdiOIwcXUE/Sf0tfoEomGI/AAAAAAAAAMM/US5F76YjtEc/s400/DSC09751.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331467555232585826" />

The last one was my absolute favorite piece of the entire show. This is a beautiful Robert Motherwell painting which I took my time with and had stuck in my head for the rest of the day. Throughout his career, he has focused on the relationship that our contemporary society holds with the land in which and on which we inhabit and interact at several different levels. In an earlier body of work titled Nuclear Landscapes, he asked the viewer to contemplate the very complex and layered tensions between the Beauty and Horror of a completely devastated landscape in Southern Nevada, as well as a few other select nuclear testing sites.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"href="http://www.petergoin.com" target="_blank"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 313px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MCdiOIwcXUE/ScloVuRReiI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/1cCgTVXTIis/s400/Nuclearland1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316895557494602274" />

In another body of work titled Changing Mines in America, Goin, along with a landscape historian, visited and photographed a large number of mines throughout the United States. With these photographs, he begins to question our understanding of mines and the evolution of the mines themselves. Some have stayed in working order, while others have become tourist destinations and park systems. These images ask one to question the cultural, historical, and environmental implications that these man-made landscapes will have as they continue to evolve and change.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"href="http://www.petergoin.com" target="_blank"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 311px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MCdiOIwcXUE/Sclq8lpthvI/AAAAAAAAAKE/x9T7jWdM4vw/s400/ChangeMines4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316898424219338482" />

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"href="http://www.petergoin.com" target="_blank"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 309px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MCdiOIwcXUE/Sclq8coHWlI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/twCRErTQZoI/s400/ChangeMines1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316898421796723282" />

Finally, in what some consider his most dynamic and thought-provoking body of work, Goin examines the very misunderstood and elaborate relationship that humans have with land and "nature". The intelligently titled Humanature, is a complex combination of photographs, text, and witty yet critical humor. The images force the viewer to confront their understanding of human interaction and alteration of our natural landscape. This in turn, forces one to reexamine the language in which we use in conjunction with the places that Goin photographs. From looking at the photos of controlled burns, human-designed forests, mechanical deer, constructed beaches, and devices disguised as "natural" items, you can begin to understand and question how unrelentingly and deeply humans are involved in the environments surrounding us.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"href="http://www.petergoin.com" target="_blank"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 315px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MCdiOIwcXUE/Sclw-TbYoAI/AAAAAAAAAKU/lFiDTJOY6mg/s400/Humanature4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316905050756915202" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 317px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MCdiOIwcXUE/Sclw99v8n1I/AAAAAAAAAKM/0c8KYcjNGtk/s400/Humanature1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316905044937580370" />

On a final note, aside from being an extremely intelligent and articulate man, and a more-than-competent artist and photographer, Peter is also a very nice man, and one of the hardest working artists that I have had the pleasure of meeting. I look forward to more work from him in the future. If you have a chance to purchase one of his books or see a show of his work, I say, take advantage.

My Website Is Down Temporarily.

Apparently, I forgot to renew my domain name. Richardson spent several months over the period of a year taking photographs of people in Harlemville, people who adhere to a philosophy of living that emphasises a back-to-nature simplicity, and the encouragement of free expression, creativity and play. In Harlemville, children are taught to be aware of nature, and are sequestered from the influence of the media and other elements of global society. Richardson’s images document pre-teen boys and girls involved in various everyday activities and outdoor play. Her images evoke a nostalgic sense of innocence and peace. The photographs also assign a very quiet sense of significance to these seemingly fleeting moments in a young person's life. Harlemville has been published as a book by Steidl. Apologies for the arrows, I took the images from a flash website, and also, sorry for the poor color quality.

<img style="cursor:pointer; I had spoke via email to the guy who runs the blog a couple months back, and a couple weeks ago, he posted my work. It's nice to see people looking at and possibly enjoying my photographs. To me, the American flag, as a symbol, follows in the footsteps of a carving of Jesus Crucified. The flag is an object that symbolizes America's freedoms as well as it's victory to secure those freedoms; and the crucifix symbolizes the freedoms of humankind as bestowed upon them through the victorious completion of the life of Jesus Christ. In a country that claims millions upon millions who follow whole-heartedly the word of "God," it seems there are many large miscalculations and misinterpretations of "His" word. For as it is written in the holy dictionary, a graven image, by definition, is an object of worship carved usually from wood or stone. But wouldn't the word of God extend beyond carving in wood or stone to include all future technological processes from plaster molds to computer generated images? So, any objects or images made in the likeness of any existing thing or idea on earth, in the ocean, or in heaven, that is worshipped or is a symbol causing mass servitude; would be a sin according to the second commandment.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MCdiOIwcXUE/SH7GVoVn0hI/AAAAAAAAAFI/TF2XJsCeo5g/s400/jesus_02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5223830692704014866" />

Since I was a young boy, I was under the impression that the American flag, being a symbol of American values and such, was something to serve, something to fly high, to salute, and to follow. To me, this woven "likeness", that people follow so willingly, is no less of a sin than serving a false idol. In a country who's government officials and much of the general public hold so close the ten commandments of the Christian bible, as well as the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution; a porcelain bust of Jesus, and the American flag, represent the same offense.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MCdiOIwcXUE/SH7GWccNl7I/AAAAAAAAAFQ/8oSOMUl05e8/s400/flag.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5223830706690299826" />

These two images, along with being part of an ongoing extended self-portrait project, are a couple my interpretations of the paradox within the parallels between Christian and American cultures.

New Images: All Work, All the Time.

If there is one thing I learned in graduate school, it came from Paul D'amato; that no matter where you are or what position you are in, you should always be making work. All work, all the time, that's how you stay in the game; not only physically, but mentally as well. And I have been. These two images are a product of my most recent way of thinking about photography, about art. It's a partial answer to a simple question: How can you make art when you are not in the financial position to do so, especially in the field of photography which is notoriously very expensive? While I would rather be working on my main project "Coming Home Never Felt So Good...", I have been doing a few side projects that require no monetary backing: scanned imagery, found imagery, drawings, minimal writings (haha), etc. So, how can I make work that means something to me and could possibly hold weight in a very populous community such as art photography? Lately, I have been thinking very introspectively, about my roots, where I grew up, previous artistic endeavors of mine, etc. Also, about who I am, who I've been, and who I may someday be. I've found that when you can't afford to think about the world, out side of your own brain and so on, you might as well take a look at yourself. I've made a fair amount of work within this spectrum of thought, and these two images are the result of trying to understand myself in the most primitive visual way I could think of: looking at my body. My body, throughout all the changes in my life, has always been present. Such an obvious statement charts a way to a fairly obvious, but thoughtful, investigation of the self. The two image are scans of my hands and my feet. They are a small look at my identity, personality, my being, etc. Hopefully I will be making enough money soon to fund my other project(s), but for the time being; this. There are more images within this body of work, and there are certainly more to come. Remember, "All Work, All The Time!" Enjoy.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MCdiOIwcXUE/SHdBdLx0esI/AAAAAAAAAE4/kURA39CAtKg/s400/02_selfportrait_hands.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221714262593141442" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MCdiOIwcXUE/SHdBdBvdTyI/AAAAAAAAAFA/67UYdrkIy_A/s400/01_selfportrait_feet.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221714259898879778" />

Sunday's Six-Part Prose

Headphones, Newspaper, and Coffee: Thirty Minutes Spent Waiting: and other things.

Sunday, June 22 , 2008, 9:45a.m.

Part I: Headphones, Newspaper, and Coffee

It's been quite a long time since the last time I was sitting alone in a coffee shoppe before noon, watching people and writing my notes for the day.

There's a man sitting in a comfy chair, in a red shirt, reading a newspaper. What I find strange about him is that he's also got headphones on. He must really be working the brain of his. And from all angles, too!

He wears denim jeans, white socks, brown shoes, and a red shirt. He doesn't seem very fashionable, save on thing, his glasses: thick black rimmed ones. They rest on his ears and nose as he reads and listens to music and sips what I can only assume is coffee.

Oh yeah, he's got a goatee.

I'm at a coffee shoppe in Shaumburg waiting for various places to open. Seems like everything opens at 11:00 on sundays. Everyone must be at church or is observing their day of rest while the rest of us sit in coffee shoppes reading newspapers, sipping coffee, listening to headphones even though music is playing on the speakers throughout the store, making our notes for the day, waiting for stores to open.

Strange.

There are three portraits next to each other on a shelf. They don't matter, and hold no importance to, except maybe to the staff here in the coffee shoppe.

Anyway, the red shirted Mr. Goatee went back to the restroom earlier. It's true, coffee makes you have to pee, and sometimes poop.

It does that to me, anyway.

So, he's back to his headphones, newspaper and coffee.

The sun is out now. Pretty good, too, I thought it was going to rain today. It still might, but I hope not.

I just finished a small cookie and a fruit juice drink. It was tasty, but I don't think I really needed it or even particularly wanted it either. All I needed was to use the toilet, so I bought something cheap, went to the toilet, washed up, and now I'm here; sitting alone in a coffee shoppe, not quite 10:00 a.m, watching people and making my notes for the day.

I don't really even care if it does rain today.

I don't.

Part II: The Semantics of Finding Employment

The male coffee shoppe employee seems nice, but strange.

The girl: quiet and cute.

Their current customer is loud, at least for the current overall shoppe volume. He's a sub-urban, 1990's pro-wrestler-esque, motorcycle looking dude.

It's 10:05, stores open at 11:00.

They're on their ways, the employees of the stores that open at 11:00.

I bet there's only two per store. One older man who's nice but seems a little strange, and younger woman; quiet and cute.

Maybe not.

But then again, maybe that's why I have no job. hmmm....

Part III: The List: part I

1. a very attractive woman with curly hair.

2. curly haired woman's friend, in a green shirt and sweats; the ones that might have a word across the ass.

3 and 4. a young guy and his apparent lady-friend. typical. early 20's, preppy, vintage, colorful clothes, ass-word sweats on the girl. the guy has a "guy's" haircut, a well fitting tee seems about 50% disinterested in his girl.

5. an older man. he wears a PING shirt. I believe he just wants his coffee.

Part IV: Other Things

It's now almost 10:15 a.m.

Green shirt and curly-hair both sat right in front of me. I believe my initial thoughts of them were in line with how I see them now that they are closer.

Now that I can hear them talk, I am slightly annoyed, but I am easily annoyed by other people anyway.

Her ass says "sure girl". I think. I'm not quite sure what that means.

Oh well, it's almost 10:20.

Part V: The List: part II

-Purple Crocs
-Caffeine Fix
-Killing Time
-Employees Being Employed
-Morning Conversation
-Newspapers
-Soft Music
-Wood Floors
-A fire place with no fire
-chess board
-three photos that don't particularly matter
-Redshirt
-headphones
-more newspapers
-and coffee...
-juice drink
-empty Cookie wrapper
-Laughing, Paying
-Reading Books
-looking at people
-Waiting
-Making notes
-waiting some more
-almost 10:30

the stores open soon

Part VI: Thirty Minutes Spent Waiting for Thirty More

Actually, her ass says "SURF GIRL"

I still don't get it, I mean, I know where I am.

Sunday; after not sleeping, too much coffee, missing a toll, and being generally broke.

Mind seems a little out of sorts today.

It's about time.

I hope it doesn't last too long, though.

Today will be okay even though I had too much coffee and no sleep

I'm tired.

It's 10:30 now.

Thirty more minutes.

I've finished my cookie and juice drink.

I've gotten my notes together.

I've used the toilet.

I've got everything I need.

Thirty more minutes, or headphones, newspaper, and coffee.

New-ish Painting!

<p align_"center">On and off for the last few years I have been thinking about art differently.
